Dreaming of a spring garden filled with tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, but not sure what will actually grow well in North Texas?

This Saturday, I’m teaching Spring Flower Bulb Magic live for students inside The Dallas Garden School. I’ll show you exactly what to order now and how to turn those bulbs into a beautiful spring display.

Not all tulips will bloom here

The most common mistake North Texas gardeners make with tulips is planting the wrong type.

Tulips are organized by bloom time and bloom style. Plant one with the wrong bloom time and you risk getting small, misshapen flowers or no flowers at all.

Tulips also need to be pre-chilled before planting, and the timing matters.

When I worked at the Dallas Arboretum, I learned many of the techniques behind its magical bulb displays: which varieties perform best, how to deter squirrels and how to plant large quantities efficiently. I’ll be sharing those techniques with you in class.

There is more to grow than tulips

Many daffodils will return year after year in North Texas, but some varieties naturalize much more reliably than others. Proper spacing and planting depth also make the difference between a few scattered flowers and a display that gets better every spring.

I’ll introduce you to lesser-known bulbs that perform well here, too. I’ve grown ornamental alliums such as Allium schubertii and Allium sphaerocephalon for years. Their unusual blooms almost don’t look real.

Species tulips, muscari and anemones can also add weeks of color to the spring garden. The trick is knowing which ones are worth planting.
